As sponsors of the Arab spring ideologically and materialistically, the US and its partners no doubt feel a sense that they are letting down the people in Syria they pledged to support. The west, in failing to get Russia and China on board, let down the groups trying to unseat Bashar al Assad. They effectively goaded the disaffected of Syria, and the middle east in general, to oust their governments and welcome in pro western democracy. This was always going to be very dangerous as the M/E is not very progressive, highly factional and riddled with Islamic terrorist groups that ignore the ballot box anyway.

These western sponsored civil uprisings especially in Syria have deadly consequences when the state acts to prevent dissent like in Bahrain, Eygpt, Libya, etc.. Over the last couple of years the civil war in Syria has claimed over 70,000 lives.

Can another state (US) arming civilians to rise up further against their own government (Syrian) be anything but an act of war? Would you not expect the state to defend itself with deadly force against those that rise up against it and those that support it. How many more people would die in Syria. Does the world really want another Iraq with over 112,000 violent deaths since 2003?

Militarily, Syria is quite capable of igniting a global catastrophe on its own which is precisely why Obama/Hagel are not silly enough to arm the rebels despite the brinkmanship and unhelpful/disingenuous rhetoric.
